"Facing the Facades"
Exhibition 1.0

Curated & Conceptualised by A.T.Sherak

Our inaugural exhibition (2019) brought together five emerging female artists to explore mental health through the intimacy of self-portraiture. Each work offered a distinct visual interpretation of inner emotional experience, inviting audiences to sit with the complexity, vulnerability, and resilience that mental health rarely makes visible.

The exhibition was accompanied by the launch of A-Z Express!, an illustrated book on mental health authored by A.T. Sherak and illustrated by Abdal Mufti.

The programme also featured a screening of Inheritance (2019), a short film by Marya Javed exploring depression and the dark realities of close relationships. The screening was followed by two rounds of panel discussion with all the artists, moderated and facilitated by Shanasa founder Tabrez Sherak, opening the themes of the exhibition into shared conversation with the audience.

We spend a lot of time, trying to explain ourselves to others & to the voices in our heads. This is an attempt to make that a little easier. A-Z Express is an illustrated exploration of emotions, situations, defence mechanisms & thoughts. Drawing on Urdu words & their English translations, each entry offers an interpretation and a reminder that the language we use to describe ourselves matters.
